KIBIRA NATIONAL PARK

Kibira National Park is one of Burundi’s most important and least disturbed protected areas. It covers about 400 square kilometers of montane rainforest along the country’s mountainous northern backbone. Located roughly 48 kilometers northeast of Bujumbura, the park remains easily accessible. It preserves a remote, wilderness atmosphere defined by cool temperatures, misty forests, and dramatic high-altitude landscapes.

The park lies on the Congo Nile Divide. This major continental watershed separates river systems flowing toward the Congo Basin and those flowing toward the Nile. Its elevated position results in high rainfall and lush vegetation. This allows the montane rainforest to flourish. About 16 percent of Kibira is primary montane forest. This makes it the only remaining ecosystem of its kind in Burundi and one of the country’s most valuable natural habitats.

Kibira also plays a vital environmental role by regulating water sources and supporting nearby highland agriculture. It borders the tea-growing areas of Teza and Rwegura. Here, cultivated slopes contrast sharply with untouched forest. Tall tree species, including Symphonia globulifera, Newtonia buchananii, Albizia gummifera, and Entandrophragma excelsum dominate the park’s vegetation. Dense undergrowth, bamboo stands, and montane bogs add to its ecological richness. Together, these features make Kibira National Park a cornerstone of Burundi’s natural heritage.
