Akagera National Park
Overview
The park cover an area of approximately 1085 sq km , Situated at lower altitudes on the Tanzania border, Akagera is dominated scenically by a labyrinth of swamps and the lakes that follow the meandering course of the Akagera River, one of the main sources of the Nile.
Location: Akagera National Park is located two and half hours drive east of Kigali Rwanda.
Wildlife: Giraffe and zebra haunt the savanah alongside more than a dozen types of antelopes, such as the diminutive Oribi and the world's largest antelope, the eland. Pods of 50 hippo grunt and splutter throughout the day outsized crocodiles soak up the sun with their vast jaws agape.
Birdlife: Lining the lakes are some of the continent's densest concentrations of water birds, while the connecting marshes are the haunt of the endangered and exquisite papyrus gonolek, and the bizarre shoebill stork - the latter perhaps the most eagerly sought of all African birds.
